Georgette the Orphan

I'm on a roll with my new litte orphans series!

Georgette lives at 1000 Magazine Street, address of St. Mary's Orphanage. Georgette is wearing the 'showing' dress. It's true it was getting a bit shabby but the girls still loved to wear it as it meant maybe they would be getting a new mommy and daddy.

Contessa

Oh my poor blog. Do y'all ever feel like there is just never enough time in a day.....I'm sure you do!! With summer vacation in the near future for my little one I fear I will have even less time for creating and blogging, on the bright side there will be lots of play, swimming and hanging out with my very favorite doll:)

Meet Contessa. Contessa was a number of firsts for me. She is the first pose-able doll I've made that can actually sit and stand. OzlemAkin's zany dolls was the inspiration for me. I've been wanting to do try this for awhile and I was pleasantly surprised to find it easier than I anticipated.

Contessa also came about in a rather weird way. When I sat down to create her I realized I had no Super Sculpey (the clay I usually use for my dolls) I also had no car to go get any clay. What I did have was a bunch of black clay. So I said what the heck and I sculpted her entirely out of black clay. I sponged on a bunch of layers of acrylic paint after firing and added some pastels. I completely love the effect and will definitely be doing more. It's funny how sometimes what seems like a bad thing (not having clay) can turn into a great thing!!

Annette and Desiree

You can read of Annette's demise here

and Desiree's here
I think these two are going to be the last of my 7717 St. Charles Street series for the time being. I've been having so much fun making them and have many many more stories to come but am feeling the need to work on some new ideas.
Desiree is the last one available at this time.

Adelaide Brule

Alright I realize I am on a bloomer rage:) One thing you may not know about me is I love underwear for outer wear. I actually own and wear bloomers instead of shorts or pants many days (thanks to my sister who makes them for me) I also love old slips and camisoles and wear them as dresses, tops and skirts. They don't make nylon and lace the way the used to so these items are always vintage. There just so pretty and in my opinion shouldn't be covered up!

So meet Adelaide in yet another pair of bloomers I really wish I had in my size.

Adelaide Brule had lived at 7717 St. Charles Ave. but only briefly. Her mother was a maid in the home but after her affair with the gentlemen of the house and the ensuing baby, her half sister Felicia, you can read about Felicia here http://www.etsy.com/view_transaction.php?transaction_id=14621292 Adelaide and her mother were sent away. They now lived down in the 9th ward in a shabby shotgun. Adelaide dreamed of living in the home again. She would spend afternoons across the street from the home, hiding behind the big oak trees gazing and dreaming of living in it's big rooms and lavish decor. One day she could no longer help herself and approached the house, the lady of the house flew in a rage when she saw Adelaide and chased her with a rolling pin. Adelaide fell off the big porch and broke her neck fleeing from the scorned woman. She is buried in cemetery No. 1 at Prytania and Washington.

Madame Simone

10th doll in my series 7717 St. Charles Ave.
Madame Simone was a well known and respected Madame whose much desired girls worked Storyville. She owned and operated an immense and upscale brothel in The District down on Basin Street. Her prostitution business was a good one and she had been able to afford herself a nice home uptown at 7717 St. Charles Ave. Her brothel was among the nicest in The District and her gentlemen clients included politicians and wealthy businessmen, many of whom were now her uptown neighbors. The ladies of her new neighborhood didn't appreciate Madame Simone and her 'business' and felt she was a disgrace. One evening when Madame Simon was attending to the brothel they broke into 7717 St. Charles Ave and slipped an overdose of morphine into Madame Simon's brandy snifter. She is buried in cemetery No. 1 at Washington and Prytania.

Pinky and Blue Boy

I hope you enjoy my Loopy version of Pinky and Blue Boy

I've always had a certain fascination with Thomas Lawrence 1700's paintings Blue Boy and Pinky. Obviously it was a different time and art and fashion were much different than today but there was just always somehthing rather strange and odd about the children depicted in the paintings. I hope you enjoy my rendition of the famous art work. I'm not really sure why Pinky ended up with a beret rather than a bonnet..I think it makes her look a bit more modern.

The pair are available in my Etsy shop
