No Two Dolls Ever the Same

I'm often asked to recreate a piece I've sold. I always have my reservations about this as I really find it quite impossible to do. I certainly can recreate certain elements of a piece clothing, colors etc.... but each doll comes out with it's own personality no matter what I do.

I think this is a really unique thing about being an art doll artist. Just as no two people are ever alike such is the case of an art doll (if molds are not used of course)

I'm really considering making the decision to no longer accept an offer to recreate a sold piece. Of course it's flattering and let's face it who doesn't need the extra income of such a sale but I feel once a doll is made she will always be completely unique from any doll I make in the future.

This is a doll I recently was asked to recreate.

As you can see Melissa (the new doll) said "no, no, I don't want to be Colette (the second and original doll) I want to be Melissa" and so she is.

Do you recreate dolls from the past??

I find it very difficult, and I prefer to move on, I'll do a series of dolls, but they all have different faces, I love the one of a kind thing, that is what art dolls is all about!!!
Besides, I find it boring to revisit the same piece, I just want to make something new

I can't make the same piece twice either. Something always has to be a little different.

I don't think it's possible to make something twice and look the same. It's good that each piece stands alone.

I just love your wonderful dolls!!!! Even when creating my artwork, I really don't want to ever make a duplicate, I just can't! What I love about your artwork is that they ARE different, totally one-of-a-kind...and just precious.

From a painter's perspective, even if I wanted to duplicate a painting, I doubt I could. Each has it's own personality. I like how your new doll looks a little bit like the original, but is her own doll. I know the customer will be happy :-)

that question just came up for me Colleen.
I was told one of my dolls could be created in duplicate..lie 10 or more...

Well I've thought about this time and time again.... as I can't make the same doll twice..... but in China they can!

Someone told me well it's like the "original" and a "print" hmmmm...

I just don't know the answer... until then I make only "One of a Kind" dolls~

Yup, no matter how closely I attempt to get with a "repeat," the new one is always it's own beasty.

Nah... and I can work from patterns. I really get bored towards the end of a doll. I want to finish to see what he/she/it will look like, and then it's on to the next one.

I doubt any doll artist could. I can't. I believe that is called "mass market creating" or some such, and it reminds me of some cog in a factory...you know, molds and such. But of course, we break the mold! ;)

I have to admit I RUN AWAY so fast whenever someone asks me to make something again. I just can't bring myself to do it. Like you, once it is done that's it. Just like there is only one Loopy, there is only one ODD, there is only one Pattee, one Zan and one Kaerie Faerie - so too with my art. ;o)
I really don't like commissions either even when I'm broke! ha ha ha!

My dolls are pretty easy to recreate although I do explain that they are hand made no two dolls will ever be the same and the vintage buttons I used are no longer available. My customers have been fine with this and all have all been happy with the dolls they've received.
I take lots of photo's of my dolls and when I do re-make a doll I wonder what it is that people find so....its tricky.
But on the whole no I'm not keen on doing it for the same reasons mentioned already here by others.
